Most hill-station trips with a pet come with some negotiation — crowded Mall Roads, cafés you have to call ahead of, traffic that makes a dog anxious before you've even parked. Lansdowne skips most of that by design. It's a cantonment town, run by the Army, which means development has stayed deliberately limited: no unchecked construction, no overrun tourist strip, and a level of quiet that's rare this close to Delhi-NCR. For a pet that finds crowded, noisy places stressful, Lansdowne is one of the easiest hill stations in North India to just show up in.
What it doesn't have — yet — is a documented pet-friendly café scene. We looked, the same way we did for our other Uttarakhand guides, and came up short: only two cafés in Lansdowne show up in pet-travel directories at all, and both are listed with an unconfirmed pet policy rather than a stated one. So instead of stretching that into a "best cafés" list, we built this piece around what Lansdowne actually offers a pet owner well: places to stay, and places to walk.
Why Lansdowne works for a pet, even without café culture
The same cantonment-board management that limits development also keeps the town clean and calm — pine forests, quiet lanes, and noticeably less traffic than most Uttarakhand hill stations. It's roughly a 5.5-hour drive from Delhi-NCR, making it a realistic weekend trip, and the terrain itself — walking trails, open viewpoints, a small lake — is the kind of environment a dog can actually relax into rather than just tolerate.
Where to stay with your pet
LaHermitage Resort, in Silwar just outside the town centre, is the most deliberately pet-friendly option we found — it runs an actual pet-friendly package rather than just tolerating pets as an exception. Pets of all sizes are welcome, rooms are set up for easy cleaning, there's outdoor space for pets to move around in, and the location backs directly onto forest trails, so a walk with your dog doesn't require driving anywhere first. Staff are described as experienced with pets rather than just accommodating them.
Zone Connect by The Park, about a 25-minute walk from Durga Devi Temple, is a 3-star option from the established Park hotels group that allows dogs indoors — a reasonable pick if you want a more conventional hotel experience with pets accommodated rather than a dedicated pet-first stay.
Blue Pine Resort and Samskara & Samsara (the latter near Durga Devi Temple) both allow dogs indoors as well, giving you a spread of options at different price points and settings around town.
The Shalam Resort, on the Fatehpur-Lansdowne road just outside town, is worth knowing about if you'd rather stay slightly out of the centre in a quieter, more spread-out setting.
Across all of these: confirm size limits, any pet fees, and specific house rules directly with the property before booking — none of the sources we checked had full published policies, just a confirmed "dogs allowed."
Where to walk with your pet
Bhulla Tal, a small landscaped lake and garden maintained by the Garhwal Rifles, is Lansdowne's most central open space — the kind of spot for an easy morning walk on a leash. There's no formal pet policy either way; it's a public space where leashed dogs are a normal, unremarkable sight.
Tip-n-Top (Tiffin Top), a short walking trail near St. Mary's Church, leads out to a viewpoint with wide Himalayan views. Same story on policy — it's an open public trail, commonly walked with dogs, without any official rule on the books. Both of these are the kind of low-key, genuinely pleasant walking spots that make Lansdowne worth the trip with a pet even without a café scene to build a day around.
About those two cafés
For completeness: Kaludanda Cafe near Bhulla Tal and Cafe Ullasa on Mall Road both have outdoor seating and turn up in pet-travel directories as places where a well-behaved dog would probably be fine — but neither has a formally stated pet policy, so we're not listing them as confirmed recommendations. If you're in town, it's reasonable to ask at the door; just don't plan your day around them the way you could with a Rishikesh or Mussoorie café.
A few things to know before you go
This is a five-and-a-half-hour drive from Delhi-NCR, further than Mussoorie or Rishikesh from Dehradun — plan rest stops accordingly if you're travelling with a pet that needs them.
Being a cantonment town means some areas have Army-related restrictions. This mostly affects photography and access to certain military zones, not general movement with a pet, but it's worth being aware of if your walk takes you near any cantonment installations.
The town's small size is a feature here, not a limitation. Lansdowne doesn't have Mussoorie's Mall Road sprawl or Rishikesh's ghats — what it has is a compact, walkable centre that's genuinely easy to navigate with a dog on a leash.
Carry water regardless of where you're headed. Neither Bhulla Tal nor Tip-n-Top has confirmed facilities for pets, and the walk out to the viewpoint in particular can take longer than expected.
Vet access is limited locally. The nearest options are Government Veterinary Hospitals in Kotdwar and Kalalghati, both some distance from the town centre — worth noting before you travel, especially for a longer stay.
